Watch: Breathtaking Time-Lapse Video of the Earth, Sky and Stars
Photographer Brad Goldpaint's three-minute video includes roughly 7,000 imagesWithin Two Worlds from Goldpaint Photography on Vimeo.
When his mother died three years ago, Brad Goldpaint decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. He'd been living in Los Angeles and working as an architect. He hadn't spent much time looking up at the stars. After all, in the city, light pollution obscures most of them. But it was different on the trail. At the end of each day, in the Mojave Desert or high in the Sierra, he'd lay back on his sleeping bag and look up at the vast sea of stars.
"I fell in love with the night sky," Goldpaint told SKYE. "Part of it had to do with being closer to my mother and the heavens."
He was carrying a camera, but he didn't consider himself a serious photographer at the time. That changed during the hike. Goldpaint discovered a passion for photography. He returned from the trip, invested in better camera equipment and moved to Mount Shasta in Northern California.
"That's where I started turning this into a profession," he said. "That's when I started concentrating solely on the night sky."
Goldpaint eventually moved to Bend, Ore., where he now works as a professional photographer. This video features roughly 7,000 images he's taken over the last three years.
The accompanying music is entitled "Believe in Yourself," by composer Serge Essiambre.
