Stunning Footage of Massive Flare Erupting on Sun

The filament traveled at an astonishing 900 miles per second
Related: Earth

A long filament erupted on the sun on Aug. 31, 2012, shown here in a movie captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The filament of solar material had been hovering in the sun's atmosphere, or corona, and erupted into space, creating a coronal mass ejection, or CME.

The flare traveled at an astonishing 900 miles per second, and did not head directly toward Earth, but did connect with Earth's magnetic environment, causing aurora to appear on the night of Monday, Sept. 3.
