Watch: Surfers Ride China's Rare "Silver Dragon"

The tidal bore occurs only once each year
Related: Earth

Once a year, a wave known as the "Silver Dragon" occurs along eastern China's Qiantang River, luring international surfers to the region. The phenomenon is actually a tidal bore, or a massive, fast-moving wave known to form at the head of an incoming tide in certain rivers during extreme tidal ranges. The Qiantang's bore is considered the world's largest, and has reached heights of 29 feet and and speeds of 25 mph.
