Shark Falls from Sky onto Golf Course?

The plummeting fish may have been the victim of a predatory bird

At the San Juan Hills Golf Club in southern California, course hazards include sand traps and falling sharks.

Or they did on Monday (Oct. 22) afternoon, when a 2-foot-long, live leopard shark apparently plummeted from the sky and landed very close to the 12th tee box at the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., course.

The writhing fish out of water was discovered by an on-duty course marshal, who acted fast to save the shark, according to the Capistrano Dispatch.

He loaded it onto his golf cart and drove it back to the clubhouse, where other employees joined the cause to save the wayward animal. After briefly placing the shark in a bucket of homemade salt water, cart attendant Bryan Stizer used his break to drive the shark to the Pacific Ocean, about 4 miles away.

"I thought he was dead," Stizer told the Dispatch. "When I dropped him into the water, he just lied there for a few seconds, but then he did a twist and shot off into the water."

The shark, which reportedly had two bleeding wounds near its dorsal fin, is thought to have been dropped over the golf course by a predatory bird, though no one is known to have actually seen the shark fall.

Julianne Steers, chief aquarist at the Ocean Institute near the golf course, told the Dispatch that there are ospreys and peregrine falcons in the area that could have snatched the shark from shallow waters before losing hold of it.

Fish falling from the sky is not an unheard-of phenomenon. The downpours of fish and frogs reported throughout history and around the world have been attributed to strong winds that pick up aquatic animals and deposit them many miles inland.

I am chuckling out loud reading this story, as I experienced a fish fall from the sky once.Granted I was on a resort right on the ocean and I did see the pelican that dropped it. Still it did happen and frankly it scared the **** out of me because it missed hitting me over the head by inches! LOL

Thank you to the kind, caring, compassionate folks who were able to assist this creature in need! What a happy ending (for once) for one of our animal friends.

Lynda, I heartily agree! I was so relieved to learn about the golf course employee(s) who helped this hapless shark. It's reassuring to know that there are still some kind, caring, compassionate folks out there who are willing to help creatures in need.

CRAP seems to FALLS from the SKY as a WRITER is not able to get enough INTEREST from their current POOL of FACTUAL STORIES they have READY. TOO much GUESSING, had the SHARK not been RELEASED back into the OCEAN, a TEST could have PROVED without the murder weapon or BODY, lmao. With no weapon or BODY, you CANNOT prove a THING! Mr SHARK told me to TELL you that WE will NEVER know now. Its KOOL-AID Mr writer!

MR WRITER, Let me give you version #2: An OWNER of a PET SHARK put the shark into his SUV so that they could dispose of the shark when he found the BEST place he could find. NEEDING attention or his 15 minutes of FAME he made this CRAP up. He WAS there so fast that he SAVED a shark that weighs close to 50 pounds BECAUSE he IS the OWNER. DEMANDING his 15 minutes of FAME. It is ENTICING for a HARMLESS PRANK ..

FINAL VERSION: That BIRD would be HUGE, EVASIVE, and because no one SAW it, also STEALTHY, that got TIRED after 4 miles of FLIGHT. Bird dropped the SHARK in some BUSHES below so that it could REST for a moment, but WORKER saw the fish and STOLE the birds DINNER by taking it to his CO-WORKERS NO one saw a BIRD fall from the SKY, but if you LOOK at me RIGHT NOW I PROMISE you can "SEE the BIRD" lol , Drinky Drinky.. IMAGINATION is all it is now that the evidence is GONE!
