Watch: Massive NYC Transformer Explosion
Many left without power as blast rocks East VillageA YouTube user posted video of this huge transformer explosion Monday night at Consolidated Edison's plant in Manhattan by the East River. Bucky Turco, editor of the website Animal New York, tweeted that he saw the explosion from the Williamsburg Bridge. "Hands still shaking," he wrote.
Others Tweeted about the blast as well. "We were roaming the windcrazed streets when the East Village explosion lit the sky green," wrote Eugenia Leigh. "Then blackout. Everywhere we looked."
Con Ed reported Monday night that it was experiencing power outages to a large swath of Lower Manhattan, from East 39th Street to the southern tip of the island.
