From wikipedia:

In 1854 the story in the current form appears, attributed by bible skeptic Joseph Barker to preacher Joseph Frederick Berg:

My opponent’s reasoning reminds me of the heathen, who, being asked on what the world stood, replied, “On a tortoise.” But on what does the tortoise stand? “On another tortoise.” With Mr. Barker, too, there are tortoises all the way down.

Bible Verses for the New Year
Bring in the New Year Meditating on God's Word
Begin the New Year meditating on these encouraging Bible verses chosen
to inspire a fresh new walk with God and a deeper commitment to living
the Christian faith.
Bible Verses for the New Year-New Birth –
A Living Hope: Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans
for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (NLT)
Forgetting the Past: Philippians 3:13-14
No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am
focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and
looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the
race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is
calling us up to heaven. (NLT)
1 Peter 1:3 New Birth a living hope
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great
mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (NIV)
Hope for the Future
When I glance back over my life and I think of all that God has done
for me, my soul cries out hallelujah, And then when I think things over
again I thank God for what He has done for me: God's Timing is Perfect
Ecclesiastes 3:11
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity
in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from
beginning to end. (NIV)
The Poets Prayer (5:12-22)
The final chapter of Lamentations is in the form of a prayer. The
aurthor ask the Lord to look on what has been happening to His people.
He acknowledges that it was decades of sin that caused this pain and
suffering (v.7). He closes his by asserting God's eterenty(v.19) and by
asking God to restore and renew his chastised people (vv.20-22).

Each New Day is Special

Lam 3:21-36
Here the clouds begin to disperse and the sky to clear up; the
complaint was very melancholy in the former part of the chapter, and
yet here the tune is altered and the mourners in Zion begin to look a
little pleasant. But for hope, the heart would break. To save the heart
from being quite broken, here is something called to mind, which gives
ground for hope (v. 21), which refers to what comes after, not to what
goes before. I make to return to my heart (so the margin words it);
what we have had in our hearts, and have laid to our hearts, is
sometimes as if it were quite lost and forgotten, till God by his grace
make it return to our hearts, that
