Man Campaigns to Demote Meteorologist to 'Weather Guesser'

The Chicago resident says a local forecaster is 'guessing and is usually wrong'

(Source: Cesar Ruelase)

Disillusioned with local weather forecasts? If so, you probably aren't as frustrated as Chicago resident Cesar Ruelase. He wants Chicago TV meteorologist Tom Skilling held accountable for what Ruelase says are consistently erroneous forecasts, and he's gone so far as to launch a website and start a petition to have Skilling demoted from meteorologist to "weather guesser."

"The reason I focused on Skilling," Ruelase told the Chicago Reader, "is people trust him even though they obviously shouldn't."

According to Ruelase, "By calling himself a meteorologist, Tom Skilling has led us to believe he knows what the weather will be. In fact, he has no idea. He's just guessing and is usually wrong."

Ruelase says he has been been comparing Skilling's predictions to actual temperatures every day since April 1. He's been tallying the variation and has counted a total difference more than 300 degrees. Ruelase told the Chicago Reader that Skilling is "a monster who seems intent on ruining our picnic plans, barbecues and wedding photos with his inaccurate forecasts."

Skilling did not return SKYE's call for a comment. Here he is in action:

Skilling has now been wrong by 480 degrees this spring alone. I am considering filing a class action suit. If you would like to join me, or have legal experience and can help, please contact me at cesarruelase@ gmail (dot) com. Thank you in advance.

I agree with several of the previous commentators above. How long has Mr. Ruelase lived in Chicago? I was born and raised there when we had a saying, "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it will change." If Mr. Ruelase doesn't like the weather let me suggest he try Vegas, Death Valley, Point Barrow and some other similar cites. Then he may regain an appreciation for Chicago weather and its unpredictability. My vote is for Mr. Tom Skilling, who is one of the better and more thorough weather forecasters my wife and I have known. We even tune into WGN and Tom's weather living here in Florida! Go Cubs!!

I have never understood the point of having Meteorologists on the news, other than to fill time. In St.Louis, the stations will cancel hours of regularly scheduled programming, to reiterate the same bogus warnings of rain or snow that "might" come our way. People run to the grocery and ravage the bread aisle as if they'll never be able to leave their homes again. It's absolutely ridiculous. If it DOES ever snow more than a inch in the Midwest, it melts by the next day in our 90 degree heat - regardless of the month. The weather people may be cute to watch - but none of them can predict the weather and the overly dramatic warnings have diluted actual alarms to warn people of a genuine emergency, such as an actual tornado touching down or hurricane, tsunami coming. Those pose a real danger - but a spot of rain doesn't require people standing on the highway in their rain slickers to inform us it's wet outside. Look out the window - there's your forecast.

i call them FEARcasters, as all t.v. "personalities" are a joke. Every one of them are selling you something and it is ALWAYS their little agenda. Put Skilling in weather jail with his brother Jeff from the Enron days. Let's see 'em do a little rain dancing in those orange suits.

I've been on the planet nearly as long as Tom Skilling has, if not longer. I, too, am from Chicago, originally. We ALL KNOW that weather forecasting is NOT an exact science. It never has been and may never be. What compounds it even more in the Chicago area, is that you have an adjacent large body of water, namely Lake Michigan. Weather, defined, is "the atmosphere" trying moderate and become equal all over". To the naysayers, I suggest looking at a world map of water vapor imagery and then YOU try to be exact. No one can, but we ARE getting better at it. Water vapor in the atmosphere, as you will see, is as fluid as water, itself...and subjected to all kinds of interferences. We'll NEVER be 100% spot on, hell, NO ONE is at ANYTHING!

I say lighten up on Tom Skilling and allow him to do what he loves....and that is being there for the public. As was stated above, his information comes directly from the National Weather Service, with perhaps some local applications also in use. wonder if Mr. Cesar Ruelase is 100% accurate with anything? Take your witch-hunt and(pardonthe OBVIOUS pun)...stick it where the Sun don't shine.
