Have an Evacuation Plan
Homeowners should be aware of their community's severe-weather warning system. In the event that a storm requires evacuation, make sure your family is prepared. Know evacuation routes and shelter locations. Fill your gas tank before storms hit.
use 2 x6, 2x8 oak, real lumber not that chip board crap.
I agree, one really cannot "over-build." A good rule is to see what the local building code is and then double that.
There are two proven protections against all natural hazards .Earth Sheltered Structures -- Fully covered with at least five feet of earth can be built with freedom from water leakage. Earth Sheltered homes can be constructed with attractive exteriors and fully customized interiors. Simply building high on a hill or ridge side away from flash or other floods avoids that hazard.Monolithic Domes provide protection against natural hazards and 100% of the living space above ground. Both building technologies have proven to provide full protection from TORNADOES, WILDFIRE, LIGHTNING, HAIL and HURRICANE WINDS.During the recent Oklahoma tornado outbreak, an Earth Sheltered home outside Carney, OK took a direct hit from a tornado without damage to the Earth Sheltered structure or its contents. A conventional structure alongside the EST home was destroyed. In wildfire situations, both construction methods provide full protection for both the exterior surfaces and interior contents. In addition -- Both construction technologies reduce H VAC energy demand by 75% to 80%, allow much cheaper casualty insurance costs and can provide a custom designed home for 15% to 25% less cost than any comparable balloon framed or conventional construction structure.
Near future. . . .Government will require those living in tornado alley regions to build underground. That will be the standard for residential living just like those choosing to live on the seashore (waterfront). Houses damaged in those regions MUST build up on stilts above safe flood zone requirements. Businesses' and schools will all be required to build underground shelters with enough capacity to accommodate all the attendees (employees & customers) PLUS an additional 30% capacity.WATCH!!
there have also been initiatives floated around here in New England where we often lose power during winter storms, that all new construction come with built in electric generators...so far i haven't heard of any passing yet
Yes indeed, and in New England and across America we are all paying huge electric bills every month. The power companies have been allowed, many by even the SEC to raise their fees with the excuse that they would use that money to upgrade their infrastructure. Generators are a good idea, full house models are ideal. The towns and people who suffered so from hurricane Sandy have missed a great opportunity. The lines that feel from the many broken poles should have all been buried when replaced. Congress did allot some 60B for reconstruction, or am I very wrong about what I read and heard reported by the media?
Don't forget to PRAY.

Move to Northern Arizona
Nothing will protect you from a Hurrican or Tornado, What you can do is greatly reduce the risk of loss of life and you belongings. Built with re enforced concrete, Walls and roof. It does not cost an outragious amount, They will tell you that because it is not in there line of expertise. You will eliminate wood framing all together, you will elimanate drywall, you will eliminate insulation, and no this is not ICF, you will eliminate exterior siding. ad up all those costs you will be living in a house that is your storm shelter. Do not I repeat Do not have those high profile roofs a max of 6/12 pitch. keep your roof simple in design.J Roza Inc

take the colon out of your title with the picture of the girl going into the storm shelter and add the word you in the right place . and you will have one of the answers.
number one thing to do -don't re/build in tornado alley.
Hurricanes usually come in the Fall and only rarely in the Summer.
What country do you live in ?
Um, no sweety. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Numerous major hurricanes have occurred BEFORE September 22 which is the first day of fall.
New Years Eve 2 or 3 years ago St Louis Mo a tornado came thru hit a neighborhood of houses here and I think the municipal air port .Today there doesn't seem to be any time of year for them b/c of really crazy weather patterns every place now They say it will continue for some years.
Don't miss a single drop.
