Look: The Most Gorgeous Desert You've Never Heard OfSee a bewitching new satellite shot of a tucked-away spot on Earth
The Taklamakan is in the northwestern part of China, and, as you can see, it's unpopulated and remote. The unique geography of the place, in which mountains ring three of its sides, makes it a dust bowl. Much of the sand and dirt that finds its way into the desert is trapped by the peaks and dunes that form and shift in the winds.
In this satellite image, taken by the Suomi NPP VIIRS satellite, the winds are high, causing a matte patina over the whole desert. We find it transfixing.
