Boaters Race Through 5 Waterspouts in Wild VideoSee the incredible footage from inside a waterspout
What do you do when your lobster fishing trip is interrupted by five enormous, swirling waterspouts? For a pair of fishermen off Marathon Key, Fla., hightailing it directly into the spout - rather than far, far away from it - seemed the natural thing to do. Luckily for curious viewers, dive captain Kevin Johnsen captured their wild ride on video last week.
Often associated with severe thunderstorms, and typically accompanied by high winds and hail, waterspouts are essentially tornadoes that form over water. A waterspout's high winds can pose a danger to boaters, threatening to flip vessels.
Despite the risks, Johnsen hightailed it toward the spouts and speaks to the camera, declaring, "We're going to batten down the hatches, put on the waterproof [and] then we're going inside." Of course, by "inside," Johnesen is referring to the waterspout.
