Photos: Italy's Mount Etna Volcano EruptsSee the billowing cloud of ash rise over Sicily; no evacuations required
Italy's Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, erupted on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, spewing lava into the air. A billowing plume of ash rose over eastern Sicily, visible across much of the island.
While a nearby airport and airspace were closed temporarily, none of the several villages located on the mountain's slopes were evacuated.
Mount Etna exhibits frequent activity, but its last major eruption was in 1992.
