Coldest Air in 20 Years to Aim at Nation's Heartland

More Arctic temps on their way to Midwest

Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014

Plummeting temperatures are on their way in much of the US. (Photo illustration by Christopher Furlong/Getty Images)

A fresh blast of arctic air will deliver some of the coldest weather in 20 years to the country's midsection during the second half of the weekend and into the start of next week.

This brutal cold will bring danger to millions from the northern Plains to the Midwest and down into the Tennessee Valley. Overnight lows are forecast to dip well below the zero-degree mark in these areas, even dropping to 30 below zero in parts of Minnesota and North Dakota.

With temperatures more than 30 degrees below normal, residents of these regions will have to take extra precautions to stay protected from the harsh winter cold.

One of most dangerous aspects of this Arctic outbreak will be the gusty winds accompanying the subzero temperatures.

These winds will make it feel significantly colder and can pose danger for those spending prolonged periods of time in the outdoors.

This bone-chilling breeze helps to carry heat away from your body, heightening the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Although it is most commonly associated with extreme heat, dehydration is also a danger that people must be aware of when spending time in the cold.

AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures take into account different variables, such as wind speed, humidity and amount of sunlight, to determine how cold it feels.

The worst of the brutal cold will focus on the northern Plains and areas just west of the Great Lakes where temperatures are forecast to stay below zero degrees for more than 24 hours.

"If the temperature in Chicago only gets to 6 below zero on Monday like currently forecast, it will be 5 degrees lower than it reached each of the last two winters."

Hundreds of thousands of football fans heading out to the first round of playoff games this weekend will need to prepare for the bitter cold.

This is especially true for those headed to Green Bay on Sunday night where temperatures are forecast to remain below zero for the entirety of the game.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the core of the arctic air will shift off to the north and east. This will allow for temperatures to slowly rise to near normal by the end of the week.

Really people, you think that you never had cold weather before. This is WINTER!! It happens this time of year, evrey year. Like clock work. Below zero is nothing new. Or heavy snow falls. Dress warmly, drive carefully and make sure you have enough food in the house. Do you really need to go shoppping for that pair of shoes when it's -15 ? Or that run to the fast food place? Stop and think, is it really necessary to go out , if you don't have too?

It's funny how Carbon Dioxide levels were HIGHER back in the Dinosaur days. Fred Flinstone and his pre-historic friends must be to blame. Right?
Oh, Humans weren't around back then?...
Right, Mother nature is responsible for 99.997% of Global Warming?
Really?
Earth=
78% Nitrogen
21% Oxygen
1% Greenhouse gases
97% of that 1% is Water Vapor (Make it rain Al Gore)
0.3% is Carbon Dioxide
0.003% of Carbon Dioxide is Man's contribution....
Soooooo........
Mother nature is responsible for 99.997% of Global Warming....Or is it Climate Change now?

***Al Gore has burned more fuel than I could ever dream of burning...that's Liberal hypocrisy***

What happened to California? There doesn't seem to be a weather crisis there. I guess it's not news for a place that has an almost perfect climate.

Mixing science and politics makes for bad science and bad government.

I love the wonder of open discussions. "When Jimmy Carter was President he refused to sell our giant computers to China because they could control the weather. Then when Bill Clinton became President he sold them to them." Hum, in 1978 the fastest "biggest" Cray computer had 1 Gigabyte Core and roughly 500 MB Disk, and 5000 MB tape... (worthless, except for input and output storage). It also ran about 800 MHz. That was exceeded by the AVERAGE PC about 2001 to 2002. AND, there is NO connection between computing power and "controlling" the weather. SO this comment is FANTASY LAND.

The charlatans who are trying to feed us this global warming nonsense and then changing the terminology to "climate change" for convenience should be ignored. No polar bears are drowning. No polar ice is melting (see ships stuck in ice now 3 of them so far). It is all political and a power play. Look for the money angle. Who benefits from all this warm-mongering? The dopey "scientists" who live off these grants and the permanently aggrieved who want hand-outs from the rest of the world.
