How terrible is the air pollution in Beijing? Bad enough that the only bright sunlight some residents saw today was on a giant LED screen in Tiananmen Square.

The city has been shrouded in smog for days, and the number of toxic small particles in the air is more than two dozen times the amount considered safe. Beijing Municipal Government issued a yellow smog alert Friday morning.

We're not certain whether the broadcast sunrise was meant as a distraction or a statement, but it certainly made for a striking image.

It's all about capitalism. I disagree with the other poster, who suggested the cost of doing business exceeding the profits causes businesses to shut down, here in the US. That has never been the case on a large scale in the US. The big US corporations simply decided they could realize MORE PROFIT by moving production overseas. In economics, this is known as ABNORMAL PROFITS, and the big US corporations have been getting it for several decades. Domestic production is still viable. It's not a matter of making a profit, it's a question of HOW MUCH profit is acceptable.

I am very happy to see many posters here understand the connection to the shifting of factories and
its effect on our economy. China has alot of leverage on many companies worldwide. Makes you wonder
If China doesnt have any smog laws (or doesnt enforce them) and the US is forcing a "CARBON tax "
on every business in the US that its US that are the sacrifice to the fake global warming Gods ,Right?
Never mind that there are more active volcanoes @ this moment then any time in history Yet the carbon dioxde level that actually makes thing grow is @ the lowest level in decades.
Never trust your politician to take your money and invest it for you.

I suppose with the continued degradation of primary education in America, a reasonable level of history is no longer taught . . so do a little research and find that Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other industrial centers in the U.S. looked as bad or worse. Though we can clearly criticize China for their current conditions, we should remember we evolved a system to mitigate the outright destructive effects of greed to a point - our skies are cleaner and our water is slowly recovering. Unfortunately, criticisms of China's government system that hint at corruption are clearly the 'pot' calling the 'kettle' black, for our banking and major corporate centers have surpassed all others in dishonesty and corruption and our government is as dishonest and less trustworthy than China's ruling party. Let's all hope they get their act together sooner than we did.

topspin360 andandreiib : China is the properly known as the Peoples Republic of China and it is a Communist nation. The government there decides what businesses can locate and/or operate there, what wages are paid and what level of pollution is acceptable PERIOD. In America pollution levels regulated by the federal government and when the expense of regulation, wages and the other costs of doing business exceed the profit required to maintain operation then business ceases to exist. Actually, deliberately creating and maintaining regulations that are so excessive as to destroy the economy of the country probably better fits the definition of treason.

What goes around will come around. Ever notice that the Earth rotates. So what is in China will eventually reach the US. Think about it.

Well this must be photoshopped since many claim that man cannot do any damaged whatsoever to his environment.

besides all the crap they build and sell to us for a fraction of the cost, look at how they live will answer that question. They could give a **** less about they're lives and what the pollution is doing to them. We are our own worst enemies for supporting they're destruction.
