He wants Chicago TV meteorologist Tom Skilling held accountable for what Ruelase says are consistently erroneous forecasts, and he's gone so far as to launch a website and start a petition to have Skilling demoted from meteorologist to "weather guesser." "The reason I focused on Skilling," Ruelase told the Chicago Reader, "is people trust him even though they obviously shouldn't." They have to understand highly scientific information about future events and deliver that information with top-notch communication skills. There's a reason why you don't see many meteorologists with PhDs on television, though a few do exist. Most have focused their love of weather on research and teaching rather than mass communication.
